Rescue in Ann Arbor
A house fire in Ann Arbor Saturday morning injured at least two residents, including one who had to be rescued from the burning home. One of the injured was reported to be in critical condition.
A dog died in the fire.
Ann Arbor Police Sergeant Shane Dennis said the whole front portion of the house in the 2900 block of Shady Lane was in flames and one person was still inside when units arrived.
“We got a call for a structure fire that was fully involved and when we got here someone was still in the building,” Dennis said. “Officers were able to pull her out the back door and she’s been transported to the hospital.”
As of 9:50 a.m., the fire had been extinguished and all residents — two adults and one child had been evacuated.
HVA spokeswoman Karen Gabrys said two people were taken to the University of Michigan hospital. One was in critical condition; the other in stable condition, she said.
Ann Arbor Fire Battalion Chief Kevin Cook also said one firefighter was taken to the hospital with a twisted ankle. A police officer on the scene was also receiving medical attention Saturday morning.
The Ann Arbor police and fire department along with four other fire departments and four units from Huron Valley Ambulance responded to a residential structure fire at about 8:30 a.m. Saturday. The home is just off Packard Street on the city’s south side.
Neighbor Kelly Turk said she woke up to screaming and came outside to see the house next door in flames.
“I heard really loud bangs and yelling so I came outside and they were screaming at the top of their lungs in the front lawn,” Turk said.
Besides Ann Arbor fire and police departments, fire departments from Superior Township, Ypsilanti Township, Pittsfield Township and the City of Ypsilanti responded to the fire.
As of 10 a.m. officials were still at the scene.
The cause of the fire is not immediately clear. Officials were continuing their investigation.
