KIRKLAND, N.Y. — A mother, father and six kids were all home Saturday morning when a fire broke out. When crews arrived just after 9:30 one of the the kids was still inside.

“There was actually still a female teenager on the second floor that had not made it out. We were able to get her out the front door. She was assisted out by a Clinton fireman,” said Clinton fire chief Bill Huther.

Firefighters said the fire started in the basement, where they looked for its source.

“Eight different firemen in there and we were unable to find the seat of the fire. And the conditions deterioated rapidly. And we got all the fireman out,” said Huther.

Crews attacked the flames from outside, but nature, along with the location of the house on a private drive, were not on their side.

“The wind played a factor and hampered our efforts. And we had to lay a large diameter hose in from the street a quarter mile away to get water into the scene,” said Huther.

Firefighters were at the home on Fountain Street until 6 p.m. Saturday.

On Sunday morning, they continued to put out hot spots.

They said putting out this fire was a group effort.

“We had a number of mutual aid departments that helped is in terms of water supply and man power,” said Huther.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
