Clifton, NJ- City firefighters rescued a 96-year-old man Thursday morning from his burning apartment in a high-rising senior housing complex, authorities said. Fire Chief Vincent Colavitti Jr. said a pile of debris caught fire and blocked the door to the man’s studio apartment in the seven-story Daughters of Miriam Center building at 127 Hazel St. A crew of firefighters had to take the door off its hinges to evacuate him while another company extinguished remaining flames, he said. The man was treated at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Paterson for smoke inhalation and possible burns, and was expected to be transported to Jacobi Medical Center in New York City. One firefighter was taken to St. Joe’s to receive stitches for a hand laceration, Colavitti said.
