MURPHYSBORO — The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting with the investigation into a Murphysboro house fire.

It happened around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday at a home in the 300 block of Cleveland Street. A neighbor reported a fire at the back of the house.

Murphysboro Fire Chief Steve Swafford says crews were able to knock down the flames and enter the home.

“Upon entry, they found a small child hiding and the mother asleep,” said Swafford in a news release Wednesday.

The mother and child were removed from the home, and no injuries were reported.

Both Carbondale and the Murphysboro Pomona Somerset Fire Departments were called to help fight the fire.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, but fire officials say it may have been caused by heat tape being used to thaw a water line.

The house is considered a total loss.
