CLEVELAND, Ohio — Firefighters rescued an unconscious 86-year-old man from the second floor of an Imperial Avenue home engulfed in flames Wednesday night.
Cleveland Fire Department spokesman Larry Gray said crews found two men outside 11705 Imperial Avenue and fire showing through second-floor windows when they arrived at the home. One of the men told firefighters he was asleep when the fire started in his father’s bedroom upstairs.
Firefighters entered the home and found the 86-year-old unconscious on the second floor, Gray said. The man was safely removed from the home and taken to University Hospitals to be treated for smoke inhalation. His condition was not available Thursday morning, Gray said.
A firefighter injured his right ankle inside the home, Gray said.
The home suffered extensive damage and may be determined a total loss, Gray said. Officials called Red Cross for the other two men who lived in the home.
There were no working smoke alarms in the home, Gray said.
Cleveland Fire Investigation Unit will determine the cause of the fire.
