Fort Wayne Rescues

Sept. 15–A person was in critical condition after being rescued by the Fort Wayne Fire Department from a smoke-filled apartment early Monday morning.

At around 12:23 a.m. the Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a possible structure fire at 5653 Woodshire Drive. When they arrived they didn’t see any flames, but after they entered the two-story building firefighters saw smoke rolling from under the bottom of the door of a first-floor apartment. Crews forced entry into the apartment where they found one person in the heavy smoke-filled apartment.

The victim was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. One other person and a dog were evacuated by the FWFD and the eight apartments cleared. The fire was found in the apartment’s kitchen area. Firefighters had the blaze under control by 12:55 a.m.

No additional injuries were reported. Those residents displaced by the fire were helped by the apartment complex management. As of press time, the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Three Rivers Ambulance Authority and Fort Wayne Police Department assisted at the scene.
