LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Firefighters saved a man by rescuing him from a second story window during an apartment fire early Saturday morning in the 3000 block of Poplar Level Road near Norton Audubon Hospital.

Louisville Fire and Rescue crews responded to the fire just before 5:30 a.m., according to Fire Captain Salvador Melendez. They found flames coming from the front of the building.

Firefighters rescued a man who was trapped on the second floor. He was transported to University Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, according to emergency personnel. A family member told WAVE 3 News he is expected to be okay.

Crews were able to stop the fire from spreading from the apartment in which it started. However, the damage to the apartment was extensive, said Capt. Melendez. It took firefighters 15 minutes to control the fire.

The building had a total of four apartments with eight residents. The other occupants in the building at the time of the fire were not injured.

Arson investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
