HAMMOND | Firefighters rescued a woman who was trapped in the basement of a burning home Sunday in Hammond, an official said.

The woman was taken to Franciscan St. Margaret Health hospital in Hammond after being pulled from the home at 838 167th St., Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Margraf said. Information about the woman’s condition was not available Sunday night.

A man who had been inside the home also was taken to the hospital with a wrist injury, Margraf said. Fire investigators had not yet determined how the man was hurt

Firefighters responded to the home about 8:15 p.m., Margraf said. Several people outside the home told arriving firefighters that the woman was trapped in the basement, he said.

Conditions inside the home were hot and smoky, he said. Investigators determined the blaze started in the basement, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation, Margraf said.

Fire officials were still gathering information about how many people were displaced. Five or six people were outside the home when firefighters arrived, Margraf said.
