TROY, Mich. –

Troy apartment fire

John R. Road has reopened in both directions between 14 Mile and Maple roads after temporarily shutting down Saturday afternoon due to an apartment fire on Lovington Drive.

Troy firefighters went to the Canterbury Square Apartments on the report of an oven fire. Firefighters had to rescue some residents on the second floor. One got out through a second-story window and two others were rescued by firefighters using ground ladders.

Two of the three residents rescued from the building were treated by EMS for smoke inhalation.

The fire was put out and firefighters did a sweep of the building to make sure everyone got out safely.

Flames did spread from the first floor to the attic, but firefighters were able to keep it from spreading across the building.

According to the Troy Fire Department, management from Canterbury Square is making arrangements for accommodations for those residents displaced by the fire. It is unknown how many were displaced or what those accommodations may be.

Fire officials are investigating a cause, but firefighters say it did start in an oven inside a first-floor unit. There is fire and smoke damage throughout the building.

“The unit involved is on the first floor on the west side of the building. That’s got heavy fire damage with fire extension to the second floor, the apartment above it,” said Troy Assistant Fire Chief Dave Roberts.

No other injuries have been reported.
