Man Rescued from Muncie House Fire

MUNCIE – A Muncie man rescued from his home after a fire broke out in his kitchen late Friday night has reportedly been released from the hospital.

Firefighters were called the house at 1504 S. Pershing Drive, just across Heekin Park from Fire Station 2, after 11 p.m. Friday. Kicking in the door, they found a fire in the kitchen and were able to contain the blaze to that room, according to Muncie Fire Department Battalion Chief James Clevenger.

Meanwhile, a rescue crew from the downtown station found homeowner Marcus Vicks, 35, lying on the floor in a bedroom. Vicks had burns on his body, indicating he had been in the same room as the fire at some point, Clevenger noted. No one else was found in the house.

Vicks required cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene, and was taken to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, where he was initially reported to be in critical but stable condition, Clevenger said.

MFD Chief Investigator Rob Mead said a pan on the stove was the cause of the fire, which appeared to be accidental.

IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital reported Vicks had been released from the Emergency Department; IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis reported he had been admitted there and had been discharged by midday Sunday, but would not confirm his condition at the time of discharge.
