TROY — Firefighters rescued a bedridden woman from a burning three-story building Thursday afternoon, officials said.

Firefighters carried the woman out of the burning structure in a wheelchair, Fire Chief Tom Garrett said.

The fire apparently began in the rear of the building at 554 Fourth St.

Two aerial ladders were among the seven pieces of fire equipment at the scene, on the corner of Fourth and Harrison streets.

Heavy smoke poured from the building, which is diagonally across from the Troy Police South Station.

Garrett said the fire crews did an excellent job in getting the fire under control and saving the building.

Deputy Mayor Peter Ryan said all residents were safely evacuated from the premises.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Garrett said.
