INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (January 3, 2015) — Firefighters rescued a woman from a burning home on the north side late Saturday night.

Indianapolis Fire Department crews arrived to smoke coming from the rear of the home in the 400 block of West 41st Street.

Inside, they found a 55-year-old woman, passed out and suffering from smoke inhalation. She was carried outside and given ventilations. She regained consciousness before being taken to Eskenazi in serious but stable condition.

Meanwhile, IFD Captain Rita Reith says they are investigating whether the woman was even supposed to be in the home. The windows were boarded up, a realtor’s lock was on the door and the utilities were shut off, leading them to believe the home was vacant and the woman may have been squatting.

Efforts to get the fire under control were complicated when crews had to search for a nearby hydrant, which was blocked by a parked car. They the had to route the hose around the car to attack the fire. That car was later removed.

Crews are still investigating the cause of the fire.
