Tech Rescue in Montgomery County, MD
On January 14th at approximately 0130 hours units from the 1st Battalion were dispatched for a high angle rescue at the FDA complex in FS12’s first due. The type of call and the time of day make this a very unusual incident.
Units arrived to find two window washers trapped in a disabled lift bucket approximately 100′ up. Fortunately, the work was being performed inside the atrium of the building so inclement weather did not become an issue for the rescue.
Technical Rescue Team (TRT) members responded from FS25, FS31, and FS29 to assist with their expertise should a high angle rope rescue become necessary. Personnel were able to break out an atrium window and remove the workers onto the roof. After an initial size up and discussing available options this was determined to be the quickest and safest way to effect a rescue.
Although this type of incident is unusual, Montgomery County is fortunate to have the technical resources readily available for these types of operations.
