MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) A man remains in critical condition after a fire tore through his home Tuesday. It happened just after 10 p.m.

Officials said the man was laying on the floor beside a bed in the back bedroom when they arrived at the home. Firefighters were able to get the man to an area hospital.

“Firefighters arrived on the scene, they reported heavy fire and smoke coming from a single story structure,” said Mobile Fire-Rescue Spokesperson Steve Huffman.

He said it took more than 20 firefighters to tame the blaze at the modest home on the 200 block of Union Avenue.

“Once they made entry, they started attacking the fire. They found a 53-year-old male in the back bedroom laying on the floor next to the bed,” said Huffman.

Huffman said the firefighter pulled the man out of the home and performed CPR, saving the man’s life. He was taken to USA’s Medical Center in critical condition, according to Huffman.

The once green home is painted black with soot, has busted windows and a damaged roof. Authorities estimate the fire caused about $35,000 in damage.
