Four people, described by fire officials as squatters, were taken to the hospital after a fire broke out in a long-vacant house on Sacramento’s Stockton Boulevard shortly after noon today.

Assistant Chief Scott Williams of the Sacramento Fire Department said the house in the 4500 block of Stockton Boulevard has not been officially occupied for more than a year but is frequented by squatters. He said firefighters have responded to numerous calls at the address over the years.

Today, firefighters arrived to find the first floor of the two-story house burning and fire spreading to the upper story. Two people were able to get out of the house before fire crews arrived, and firefighters extricated two others. All four were transported to an area hospital suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. Williams said he did not know the extent of the injuries, but one individual was transported receiving CPR.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Williams said the house had neither gas nor electrical power.
