Firefighters rescued a 60-year-old man trapped in a car 100 feet down from state Highway 4 in Hercules, reports The San Francisco Chronicle.
Firefighters from Contra Costa County, Rodeo-Hercules and Pinole responded to a report of an accident shortly after 8 a.m. They found the vehicle on top of a drainage pipe about 100 feet down an embankment from the road, officials said.
The car, a Toyota SUV, went down the embankment after it lost control, hit a guardrail and overturned, they said.
Firefighters used a rope rescue system to bring the man to the road, where he was airlifted to a local hospital. He suffered serious injuries to the head, chest, and extremities, they said. The man had surgery and is still in critical condition, said Steve Akre, acting battalion chief of the Pinole Fire Department
